Support the learner without adding another lesson
- 01
Find the task
Read the teacher-approved instruction together.
- 02
Listen
Ask which part sounded closer to the intention.
- 03
Support
Help them begin, pause or ask a specific question.
You can support a child’s practice without taking over the teacher’s role. Help them start, listen with interest and notice what they are trying.
Ask for the task
“What did your teacher ask you to work on?” If the answer is unclear, find the approved note together. Avoid adding a second set of instructions from memory.
Ask a listening question
“Which part sounded closer to what you wanted?” or “Where would you like to try again?” These invite the child to listen rather than wait for your verdict.
Make starting easier
Help locate the music and create a manageable moment to practise. A calm five-minute start can be more useful than an argument about a long session.
Know when to pause
If the task is confusing or frustration keeps rising, make a note of the question for the teacher. Repeating unclear work is unlikely to resolve the misunderstanding.
Praise a specific action: “You stopped to listen and changed the ending.” This recognises a learning habit without pretending every attempt was perfect.
