A parent’s listening question card set

Explore teaching resources
Illustrated explanation

One listening question is enough

  1. 01

    Before

“What are you trying to make clearer?”

  2. 02

    After

“Which part sounded the way you wanted?”

  3. 03

    If it is difficult

“Try a smaller part, pause, or ask your teacher?”

Leave time for the child’s answer. You do not need to supply the technical solution.

Choose one question before listening to your child’s practice. You do not need to know the correct technical answer.

Before playing

  1. “What are you trying to make clearer?”
  2. “Where will you start and stop?”
  3. “Would you like me to listen quietly or help you find the instruction?”

After an attempt

  1. “Which part sounded the way you wanted?”
  2. “Where did you want to try again?”
  3. “What changed between the first and second try?”

When it is difficult

  1. “Is the instruction clear, or should we ask your teacher?”
  2. “Could you try a smaller part?”
  3. “Would a short pause help before another attempt?”

At the end

  1. “What would you like to show your teacher next time?”
  2. “What helped you get started today?”
  3. “Which part did you enjoy hearing?”

How to use the cards

Ask one question, then allow time for the answer. Do not turn the whole set into an interview after every practice session.

If the learner asks for technical help beyond your knowledge, help them frame the question for the teacher. Your role can be to support attention and confidence without supplying a competing lesson.
