Keep students motivated between lessons with small, meaningful wins

Explore teaching tips
Illustrated explanation

Make the win something the learner can hear

  1. 01

    General praise

    “Well done for practising.”

  2. 02

    Recognisable change

“You kept the beat through the join that stopped last week.”

Name the change, ask whether they noticed it, then offer one meaningful next choice.

A meaningful win is a change the learner can recognise, not simply a higher number.

Name the change

Instead of “well done for practising”, say “you kept the beat through the join that stopped last week”. Ask the learner whether they noticed it too.

Make the target reachable

Choose a task that can improve within a short session: prepare the first note confidently, hold a long note for its full value or join two familiar bars. Keep the larger musical ambition in view.

Offer a small choice

“Would you like to shape the ending or make the opening more fluent?” Both options should support the current learning plan.

Keep records in perspective

A streak may encourage some students and discourage others. Treat it as one piece of activity information. Ask about the music, the circumstances and the next useful attempt.

Finish a lesson by replaying something that has changed. Hearing progress can make the reason for returning to the instrument more concrete.

Make progress visible through goals.
