Try the “join” challenge
- 01
Isolate
Last beat of one bar + first beat of the next.
- 02
Attempt
Keep counting while the notes change.
- 03
Reconnect
Restore the surrounding phrase and listen again.
Choose one challenge for a familiar passage. Each card includes a task and a way to reflect; stop if the instruction is unclear.
- The clean start: prepare the first note, count in and begin once. Was the start deliberate?
- The join: play the last beat of one bar and the first beat of the next. Did the pulse continue?
- The quiet ending: play the final phrase twice with different endings. Which sounds settled?
- The rhythm voice: speak the rhythm before playing. Which duration needed attention?
- The slow camera: play slowly enough to notice the next movement. Where did you still search?
- The listening replay: record a short permitted attempt, listen once and choose one change.
- The one-note rhythm: play the passage’s rhythm on a single pitch. What becomes clearer?
- The contrast: play connected, then detached. Can you make the difference intentional?
- The memory check: look away and describe the opening pattern before trying it.
- The return: practise a small section, then restore the surrounding phrase. Does the improvement remain?
Teacher note
Choose a challenge that fits the current goal. A beginner may use one bar; an experienced learner may use a phrase. These are practice experiments, not ten daily obligations.
Finish with: “I changed ___, and I heard ___.”
