A reflection that leads to action
- 01
Hear
Play two bars with one question in mind.
- 02
Describe
“I paused before the first note of bar 2.”
- 03
Choose
Practise the join, then restore the phrase.
Use this reflection activity after one short attempt. It works aloud, so the learner does not need to write a report.
Hear it
Play a familiar two-bar passage once. Choose a single question beforehand: “Does the pulse continue through the join?”
Describe it
Complete one of these statements:
- “The part that matched my intention was…”
- “I hesitated when…”
- “The sound changed after I…”
Use a concrete location if possible: “before the first note of bar 2”.
Choose the next step
Pick one:
- Hear the teacher’s example again.
- Count and tap the passage.
- Try a smaller join.
- Slow down enough to prepare.
- Ask a specific question.
Worked example
“I kept the pulse in bar 1, but paused before bar 2. I will practise the last beat of bar 1 and the first two beats of bar 2, then put the phrase back together.”
Compare
Try once more and describe what changed. If nothing changed, that is useful information: choose a different method rather than repeating the same attempt indefinitely.
The aim is a more deliberate next action, not a compulsory positive comment.
