Agree a first step together
- 01

A recognisable melody or a reading goal.
- 02
Try
Echo C–D–E–D and choose one improvement.
- 03
Plan
Agree a realistic practice starting point.
- 04
Say it back
Learner names the task; adult names their support.
Use this ten-minute conversation activity to agree how learning will work. It contains prompts and examples, not a form to fill in.
1. Choose a musical direction
Offer three starting statements:
- “I want to play something I recognise.”
- “I want to feel more confident reading.”
- “I want to make music with someone else.”
Ask the learner to choose or adapt one. Turn it into a first step: “Find and play the opening five notes of a melody you like.”
2. Try a small task
Play C–D–E–D as four equal notes. Ask the learner to echo it, sing it or describe its direction. Then choose one improvement together: a steadier pulse, a quieter ending or a more confident start.
This gives the conversation a shared musical example.
3. Agree a practice starting point
Offer two realistic choices: a five-minute session on a busy day, or a longer session with a break. Ask what would make starting easier. A clear task and accessible instrument may matter more than a larger time target.
4. Agree how to ask for help
Practise the sentence: “I tried the task, but I am unsure about ___.” Find where the learner will see notes and contact the teacher.
5. Close the agreement aloud
The teacher says the next musical step. The learner says when and how they will try it. The supporting adult says what help they can offer without taking over the lesson.
