A lesson explanation becomes an assignment when the learner knows where to start, what to do and how to judge an attempt.
Set work in the student record
Open Students → select the learner → Assignments to manage the work you set. Choose a manual assignment when the task needs your own instructions rather than an automatically marked exercise. Check the title, resource and completion requirements. During the lesson, explain and assign the task while the student can try it with you.
Choose one learning outcome
Start with what you heard. “The learner loses the beat at the turn” suggests a focused pulse task. It does not require a full page of technical instructions.
Choose a small enough passage for a complete attempt. Bars 1–2 of the original five-note study are suitable.
Write four parts
Place: bars 1–2.
Action: tap the pulse while saying the note names, then play slowly.
Amount: two careful attempts, with a pause between them.
Check: the beat continues when the melody changes direction.
Put the shared score where the learner can find it and use the same title in the assignment. “Practise the attachment” becomes confusing once several files exist.
Choose the task type
Use a manual assignment for a musical activity that needs your own instructions. Use a theory or aural exercise when its available settings fit the concept you want to practise. Check the difficulty and completion requirement before assigning.
Test understanding
Ask the learner to explain the first step. If they say “play it lots”, the instruction may still be too broad. Demonstrate a complete practice attempt before the lesson ends.
Review next time
Compare the task’s success cue with a new attempt. Completion tells you the activity happened; it does not automatically mean the musical goal is secure.
Try focused practice challenges.
Assign while you are together
Prepare exercise settings before the lesson, then open the scheduled Classroom for online or in-person teaching. Customise and try the task with the student, and assign it during the lesson so they leave knowing how to start. Review the following week’s attempts from Students → select the learner → Practice.
