Listen to four original concert-pitch examples. Each contains two notes, played separately at the same intended loudness. Replay as needed before opening the answers.
Hear
1. Same pitch, higher or lower?
2. Same pitch, higher or lower?
3. A rising step or a wider rising movement?
4. A rising step or a wider rising movement?
Name and play
Describe the direction first. Then, with the starting note supplied by your teacher, try to reproduce each pair on your instrument or by singing in a comfortable range.
Answers and teacher notes
- C4–C4: same pitch, perfect unison.
- E4–D4: downward step, descending major second.
- C4–D4: rising step, major second.
- C4–E4: wider rising movement, major third.
The clips use synthesised tones and are not intended as instrumental tone models. You do not need absolute pitch to answer the direction questions.

Extend
Teacher plays two of the examples in a new order. Learner identifies the shape, then finds a similar movement in their current piece. Keep the rhythm constant while changing pitch so the listening question remains clear.
