Use this prompt sequence with any short demonstration or passage. The learner can answer aloud.
Listen
- Where does the phrase seem to be going?
- Which sound lasts longest?
- Where does the melody change direction?
- What do you want to remember before trying it?
Listen once for the overall shape and once for the chosen detail. Do not ask all four questions at the same time.
Play
- What is your starting note or position?
- What pace lets you prepare?
- Which one detail are you listening for?
- Where will you stop?
Try a complete short passage without interrupting every note.
Reflect
- What matched your intention?
- Where did you hesitate?
- What one change will you make?
- Do you need to hear the example again?
Worked response
“I listened for an even pulse through bar 2. I played slowly, but I paused before G. Next time I will prepare that note while counting the previous beat.”
Teacher note
An honest description is more useful than “good” or “bad”. If the learner cannot hear the difference, demonstrate a stronger contrast before asking for another attempt.
