Review repertoire progress with a student

Illustrated explanation

The record follows the teaching decision

  1. 01

    Listen

Hear the same passage as last time.

  2. 02

    Discuss

    What changed? Which method helped?

  3. 03

    Decide

Continue, refine or choose the next goal.

  4. 04

    Record

    Update the reviewed outcome appropriately.

Moving a goal is not a substitute for hearing the musical evidence.

Use a repertoire review to connect the learner’s experience with a new musical decision.

Written walkthrough

Open the current goal and previous observation. Ask for the relevant passage, discuss what changed and record an appropriate next step.

Recording script

Previous goal. “Last time we wanted the pulse to continue through the turn.”

Current attempt. “Listen to the same two bars before looking at the status.”

Conversation. “What helped? Which part still needs preparation?”

Review. “We can now hear the join clearly. The next step is shaping the phrase ending.”

Canvas. “The record follows the teaching decision. It does not make the decision for us.”

Capture notes

Use an original demo performance or clearly labelled synthetic example. If showing a completed goal, explain the evidence rather than simply moving a card.

End card: “Listen, discuss, decide, record.”

Plan around musical interests.
