Turn a review into a new direction

  1. 01

    Hear the change

Return to the earlier musical question.

  2. 02

    Keep the method

    Name what helped the learner.

  3. 03

    Choose together

Shape this phrase or transfer the skill to a new melody.

Finish with the next action, not only a status update.

A progress review should lead somewhere. Begin with the learner’s musical experience, then choose the next goal together.

Ask what changed

“What feels easier than it did a few weeks ago?” Give the learner time to answer before showing records.

Play a specific example

Return to the phrase, rhythm or listening skill you previously discussed. Compare the result with the agreed intention rather than another student’s performance.

Name the method that helped

Counting aloud, practising a join or listening before playing may be worth carrying into the next piece.

Choose one next direction

Offer two suitable possibilities: shape the phrase more clearly, or transfer the same skill to a new melody. Explain what each option develops.

Finish by stating the next action, not merely a status update. “We will use that steady pulse in a melody with wider leaps” makes the progression understandable.

Build a learning plan around interests.
